Force and Motion

Objectives

In this unit, students will understand that objects can be moved by forces of motion that can be described, measured, and predicted. Students will:

  • communicate a directional vocabulary.

  • compare different objects that move.

  • investigate different objects with wheels and different types of transportation.

  • identify directed air as a source of movement.

  • recognize that objects can move in different directions and at different speeds.

  • observe and describe how the movement of an object can be changed
    (e.g., push/pull, fast/slow).

    Have students draw pictures of different kinds of transportation. Encourage children to draw background and details. Tell them they should draw at least three kinds of transportation. When they are finished, have them describe their pictures. Post vocabulary on the board to help.

    Performance Assessment:

    Explain to students that they will draw a picture of a toy that is pushed or pulled. The toy may not be powered by batteries or electricity. Students will decide if you push or pull the toy. They will complete the picture and fill in words that describe their picture.

    One example: The student draws a picture of a football. The student completes the description: This football moves with the push of a hand.
